United 93 That being said, it wasn't as intense as the opening scene of "Saving Private Ryan" or some scenes from "The Passion of the Christ" as some had suggested. I'm not sure if I'll ever see another film as intense as either of those. It's told in a documentary style. There are no scenes involving the loved ones at home, etc. There are no "sappy" sub-plots. The story is told as if you were one of the passengers on United 93. And you know very little more than the passengers themselves did on that terrible day. It IS a movie that every American should see, if for no other reason, to remind them of who and what the enemy is and how far we've come since that day. I'm afraid that many have become far too complacent as time has moved on. It's natural I guess, but just because it's natural, doesn't mean we should succumb to our own human weaknesses. This is a war that requires strength and commitment, not "business as usual". I'm sure that many from the "I hate America Club" won't see this film and that's fine, I wouldn't expect them too. Unfortunately, many will never "get it" until something like this befalls their country and their brothers and sisters. I hope of course that day never comes for anyone, regardless of where they live or how much they hate America. I just hope that one day they will indeed understand what's going on in this day and age, without having to pay that sort of "tuition" for the education. I viewed it today and must agree that it was intense, but you are right, not quite as intense as some other movies from recent memory.
I think what makes it so intense is to think that that day started as any other day and ended with shock and confusion. United 93, with the documentary style filming recreates the uncertainty of those first hours of the attack.
What made it so intense was the fact that it could have been any one of us on that plane, going about our lives, when suddenly they were interrupted with no warning whatsoever. That's what got me, imagining the horror, or rather, seeing it depicted on screen, of the passengers on that flight.
I hope some of the "I Hate America" crowd do view the movie and remember that this is a great country and we are privileged to live here. We should also defend Her and protect Her from those who have vowed to destroy her.
We are at war. The movie drives that point home in a major way.
Susan, thanks for your comments. I think one of the major points that I took away from the film was how utterly unprepared the FAA and the U.S. Military were for something like this.
There were two very emotional scenes for me. The first was when the 2nd plane hit the towers and the look of those at the FAA and NORAD. That moment in the film, brought me back to the horror of 9/11. I was back in the same moment of shock and disbelief as when I watched it live that terrible day.
One thing that many people may not know is that several of the "actors" used for those scenes are the real life people who were there that day. I read this before viewing the film and this led to a lot of realism in my mind.
The second really emotional moment was the last few seconds of the film when you literally see the ground racing toward you from the view of the cockpit.
As I think back on it more now, I can remember being tense and angry at the very beginning of the film, because I knew what was about to unfold. I was angry the day it happened, I'm angry now and I'll feel that way until the evil that we face is extinguished from this Earth.
