THANK AUSTRALIA FOR YOUR EIGHT HOUR WORK DAY. HAPPY MAY DAY FROM CHINA ![]() May Day is the start of the"Golden Week" holiday. It is a week of great reverie and unimaginable crowds for entertainment, sightseeing and celebration. Tens of thousands will gather in Tian'anmen square for the ceremonial flag raising. ![]() May Day dates back to 1856 in Australia. Workers decided on a day of work stoppage as a demonstration in favor of an eight-hour work day. Americans followed suit in 1886 by deciding that May 1 should be a day of universal work stoppage. Some 200,000 workers of them left their posts and demanded an eight-hour day. Police and legal harassment stalled a repeat of the event until 1888. Europe, led by the French (who think May implies permission to take long vacations not the name of a month :) ) led the charge in 1889: A European Workers Congress decided that the eight-hour day would be their lead demand. In China May Day implies MILLIONS of train travellers, park visitors and more than 5 million people crossing the border to Hong Kong and Macau. Disneyland will indeed be a small world after all. Retail businesses will experience up to a 40% increase in sales. The government usually boasts that there are rare reports of traffic accidents involving casualties during holiday. Ah, it may be the dearth of privately owned vehicles, but I am just speculating. I am laying low. It will be site clean-up day for me and the addition of many more expat services on the sidebar.
