ROCK BOTTOM REMAINDERS What do you get when you mix Stephen King, Dave Barry, Scott Turow, Amy Tan, Mitch Albom, Matt Groening, and a group of other enviable writing talents? Besides a laugh out loud cartoon horror flick set in China with sounds you would never hear in Heaven you conjure the Rock Bottom Remainders. The Rock Bottom Remainders are to music what Yahoo! is to Chinese free speech. I have long wanted to see the RBR play even before they desecrated the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's stage or earned accolades from the likes of Bruce Springsteen who said, "Your band's not too bad. It's not too good either. Don't let it get any better, otherwise you'll just be another lousy band." The RBR who, self-reportedly, have no record contract, no music videos and no Grammy nominations, but over 95,000 hits on Google are playing on tour as I write. "Hailed by critics as having one of the world's highest ratios of noise to talent" Barry says they play music as well as Metallica writes novels. It is a strange meeting of genres. And I have long admired the work of virtually all of them. Tan, Barry, King, Turow and Albom are five of the people I would love to meet in Heaven--Uh, fat chance Dave. Anyway, if you are in LA this weekend check them out at UCLA where they will be playing with guest harmonica wielder Frank McCourt (He is that Irish fiction writer from Limerick) of Angela's Ashes fame. On Barry's blog he has chronicled a bit of the trip and also seems to be trying to catch Amy Tan in the buff. Here is a shot found on his blog recently and sent to me by Ms Cyrilla.  A special request to Dave and the crew: How about sending me a picture of the band for my blog? If you send one I promise not to publish any more photos of Dave in various states of undress:  And just for fun I went to GOOGLEFIGHT and pitted key words against each other to see how Barry and Band fared: The Rock Bottom Remainders showed in Google 173,000 times while The Butthole Sufers had 1,390,000 entries. Sadly, Nude Chinese-American Writers had 6,250,000 results while Dave Barry for President yielded 7,120,000 results. In a real shocker: Stephen King beat The Simpsons 83,500,000 to 67,000,000 and Frank McCourt lost to Big Mac with Cheese by over 3,000,000 returns. Sorry I missed the tour guys.
