Nothing interests the media ...

... so much as itself, and that's why the cable news networks are nattering ad nauseum about Tony Snow's selection as the White House's new press spokesman. It's really no more than tedious trade gossip, and there's no reason why any grownup anywhere should care a hoot one way or the other.

The company line is whatever it is, and it shouldn't make a lick of difference who spoons the bilge.

In reality, I mean.

Whether or not the assembled luminaries of the press feel righteously-indulged according to their august station by the spooner makes a lot of difference, however, to the coverage they provide and the picture of events given to the American people. Recall, for instance, all those news articles from the Clinton presidency which focused on Mike McCurrey's knack for delivering preposterous statements with a wink that let the media know that nobody should take what he was saying seriously.

McCurrey successfully made an inside-joke of Clinton's squalid conduct, putting reporters in the position of breaching some notion of worldly camaraderie if they went after him.

In other words — and never mind the yak-yak-yak — a press secretary's job is to stroke inflated egos; it has nothing to do with credibility, articulateness, those sorts of things. A good press secretary, in the eyes of the press itself, is the sort of person from whom Kevin Costner might enjoy a massage.
