Just one more cigarette, I promise Of course, everyone understands that the current German government must have a credible reason for supporting big and expensive national anti-tobacco campaigns on the one hand and sabotaging the European Union’s attempts at curbing smoking in public on the other. It’s just that nobody has heard it yet. Cynics suggest that the tobacco industry has been highly active on the political scene as of late and also very generous when it comes to the contribution of huge amounts of money to practically every German political party in existence and that the immense sum of cigarette tax revenue pouring into the state’s coffers has always been a welcome sight at the now near-bankrupt Finance Ministry, but cynics are always suggesting stuff like that so I wouldn’t take them too seriously if I were you. But just let me get this straight. The Irish and the Spanish and the Italians aren’t allowed to smoke in public anymore, but the Germans are? Is this another one of those New Europe/Old Europe things? Come visit me at Observing Hermann...
