Iran enriches uranium for the first time; Allahu akbar!

The definition of a great day for hard-line Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is when he can announce to his countrymen and the world that Iran has successfully enriched uranium for the first time. That day has come and Ahmadinejad is strutting around the country like a banty rooster, crowing out the good news.

When he made the announcement, the attending crowd reportedly broke out into cheers of "Allahu akbar!" which in English means "God is great!" It's a common Arabic expression. Terrorists use it all the time when they're blowing up a cafe full of Jews or hacking some poor infidel's head off.

In his speech, Ahmadinejad attributed the great success to "the blessings of God almighty and the efforts made by our scientists . . ." Hey, how about a hat tip to the infidels who came up with this technology decades and decades ago?

The Iranian Prez may have 'em dancing in the streets of Tehran over this nuclear breakthrough, but the civilized world isn't sharing in the ecstasy. That's because it knows it will have to deal with this menace sooner or later. Sure, Ahmadinejad is insisting that his country doesn't aim to develop nuclear weapons, but if you believe that, then I've got a nice timeshare on the Persian Gulf I'd like to sell you, cheap.

Does anybody remember the Ayatollah Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani? He was the so-called "moderate" candidate in the last Iranian "election." He happens to be on record saying the following:

"When the Islamic world acquires atomic weapons, the strategy of the West will hit a dead end -- since the use of a single atomic bomb has the power to destroy Israel completely, while an Israeli counterstrike can only cause partial damage to the Islamic world."

Anyone care to gamble that such statements are just a lot of hooey? My humble advice: Be worried, be very worried.
