FOR BETTER OR WORSE: FIDELITY IN CHINA In Changzhou there was a special wedding held on the 12th of April. Hundreds of local citizens showed up for the marriage of a man and woman in Jinasu Province. Psychologists might have a field day with this one, but I find it to be an example of extraordinary love, fildelity and optimism. It is also a haunting reminder of how tragically the health care system has evolved in China. The couple were engaged last November, but the pregnant bride was hit by an automobile the same evening and lapsed into a coma from which she has yet to fully awaken. The bride, Xiaoxiao, didn’t miscarry during the accident and gave birth on February 21 2006. Xiaoxiao apears to be getting better say doctors, but medicine and aid needed for her full recovery have become too expensive for the family. The families have already spent the equivalent of thirty years of salary in order to care for Xiaoxiao. Groom Cao Weixin has stayed by her side throughout her coma and, until now, regretted not being able to fulfill a promise of marriage to Xiaoxiao. He and the woman's family decided on a wedding to honor his wish hoping too that it would trigger a remission for Xiaoxiao.
