Can Russia And China Make It To The Moon? Last year Russia spent a total of $660 million towards its space program, while China spent an estimated $500 million. NASA, in retrospect spent $16.5 billion, dwarfing both nations roughly 14 times over.Although both countries space programs have accomplished amazing feats, establishing a presence on the moon will cost billions of dollars, which is definitely outside of either nation's budget. Unless significant strides are taken to increase funding towards the stars, Russia and China may have to settle for an American presence looking down on both of them from above. I was on the NASA Manager's Council in the 70's. I was also the first Executive Officer of the Mississippi Army Ammuntion Plant.
As an ordnance officer I saw, up close and personal in EOD school, Russian and Chinese munitions.
They were crudely made in comparison to ours, but they went boom and devastated military and civilian tagets just like ours did but,at a fraction of the cost.
I can buy an eight-course meal here for about $5.00--Though lately my dollar has been shrinking as the Yuan improves.
I saw the immense National pride that the last Chinese manned flight provoked. It reminded me of the old days when we actually cared about exploration, National image and the preservation of our place in history as scientific pioneers.
I have been the guest of the government here for a few warm-up celebrations for various things: all precursors and prepatory events for the Olympics. They were breathtaking. The Beijing Olympics will go down as one of the most spectacular in history and probably one of the cheapest.
The trip to the moon has been promised to a generation of young people in need of some hope of a place the real global market of ideas and optimism. Don't count on money being the thing to stall them. After all, all they would have to do is call in the monies owed them by us and we might have to mortgage NASA.
Count on them to take an Asian leap for mankind and count on them to do it cheaply and well.
We cannot remember the names of most of our space heroes. Hell, Most kids think one of them was Tom Hanks. We damn sure do not remember people like John Nabors who won six Gold medals and a silver in swimming so who cares about Fencing, Taekwondo or other piddling sports? Who cares that the Chinese might be on the moon tracking over Armstrong's footsteps?
They do.
We should.
