TREES WHO PREFER CALM* I am going to start a Magician of the Week club to spotlight the corporate scumbags that make people, places, and hope vanish on the internet. The ones who provide no shelter to anyone but themselves in these stormy times. This week it is Cisco. ![]() The follow is a paraphrase of an artilce you can find at AsiaPundit. Asiapundit has established another website that calls for the release of Hao Wu (Chinese name: 吴皓). He is a Chinese documentary filmmaker who lived in the U.S. between 1992 and 2004. He was detained by the Beijing division of China’s State Security Bureau on the afternoon of Wednesday, February 22, 2006. On that afternoon, Hao had met in Beijing with a congregation of a Christian church not recognized by the Chinese government, as part of the filming of his next documentary. These are known as "Underground Churches" and are illegal by Chinese law. Hao had also been in phone contact with Gao Zhisheng, a lawyer specializing in human rights. Gao confirmed to one of Hao’s friends that the two had been in phone contact and planned to meet on Feb. 22, but that their meeting never took place after Gao advised against it. On Friday, Feb. 24, Hao’s editing equipment and several videotapes were removed from the apartment where he had been staying. Hao has been in touch his family since Feb. 22, but judging from the tone of the conversations, he wasn’t able to speak freely. One of Hao’s friends has been interrogated twice since his detention. Beijing’s Public Security Bureau (the police) has confirmed that Hao has been detained, but have declined to specify the charges against him. Though the reason for Hao’s detention remains unknown, one of the possibilities is that the authorities who detained Hao want to use him and his video footage to obtain evidence needed to prosecute Underground Church members. The website reference on Asiapundit is already blockaded from the mainland, so I am unable to view it. Please send your letters of appreciation for that effort to the folks at Cisco who sold the technology that enables this to happen. I think Cisco, Yahoo! and Google will eventually get involved in the human rights movement--when they all agree on what kind of anti-censorship merchandise will turn a buck. Addendum: A few weeks ago I sent my site's address into a website that routinely reviews and often trashes other sites. They once did it it with a great deal of wit and creativity. Sadly, they have lost their edge and have become abusive, juvenile and redundant. I had hoped to get panned and get a good laugh at the same time. Instead, I was disappointed that they said that my site looked too political and they did not even bother to read it. But, I did receive their lowest rating anyway. I am actually pretty apolitical, but I try to maintain a strong voice against censorship and in speak out in favor of freedom of religion, press, Internet, and all forms of free speech. The folks who critique for that website must live in a comfortably well insulated place if they cannot hear the winds of oppression howling beyond their doors. Stay smug! Soon they will be boarding YOU up in a place where you can't hear a thing. *Trees may prefer calm, but the wind will not subside.
