STEAL A BAG LOSE YOUR LIFE ![]() Here in Guangzhou I know only a handful of people who have not lost something to a street thief and the criminals were never apprehended. One member of a college foreign affairs staff had her bag snatched by motorcyclists working in tandem. Another woman on the same staff was surrounded by nine (yes, nine) men who took her necklace. Those above are two of the three most common forms of theft in Guangzhou. The other involves thugs working as a team: one or more will distract you while another uses a knife to slice open your bag or pull money from you pockets with hemostats. Resistance will often get you attacked or stabbed. But, according to Amnnesty International thieves who use violence may now face the death penalty. This was recently announced by Guangdong provincial authorities. According to AI: "The Vice-President of the Guangdong High People’s Court, Chen Huajie, announced on 28 February that the penalty for bag-snatching had been increased to a minimum prison sentence of three years, and can now include the death penalty. The ruling was a result of a new judicial interpretation that defined all kinds of violent bag-snatching by motorists as 'robbery'. The crime of bag-snatching used to attract a maximum sentence of three years in prison in Guangdong, according to reports in the Chinese press. The official Chinese media reports that more than 80,000 people had been convicted of ‘robbery’ and ‘violent robbery’ in Guangdong Province in the last two years. As some of you know, I was robbed in a very elaborate scheme in a crowded area. I remember saying I would have killed those guys if I could have found them. Honest, I hate them, but I didn't mean it!
