Saddam makes another political speech -- er, I mean, testifies -- at his trial

You gotta give Saddam Hussein one thing: He's a persistent cuss. Ostensibly testifying in his trial for the first time, but in reality just making another long-winded and delusional political speech, he advised the Iraqi people to resist the American invaders rather than fighting amongst themselves.

He also continued to insist that he is still Iraq's elected president and referred to his trial as a "comedy." The real comedy is that this guy just can't seem to wrap his head around the whole deposed leader thing. The entire world has guffawed at the pictures of him being checked for lice and lounging around a cell in his underwear, but he's still the only person who doesn't get it.

The judge attempted to clue in the former dictator by declaring, "You used to be a head of state. You are a defendant now," but Saddam's rhythm was barely broken as he continued to read from a prepared text.

He also lamented the spate of Shiite-Sunni violence that has recently gripped his former playground of a country: "What about the innocent people who are dying in Baghdad? I am talking to the Iraqi people."

There's a laugh. Saddam used to fill up mass graves with "innocent people" all day long without batting an eye, but now he's upset over a little sectarian violence? Upset that he's not in on the action is more like it.
