ROCHE AND FREINDS: MURDER OR GOOD MANAGEMENT?

by Lonnie Hodge

I have always believed that pharmaceutical companies were not much different than cocaine or heroin cartels except that drug company exec's wore cheaper suits and their companies were listed on stock exchanges.

DOPE DEALERS

The United States government gives away $30 billion a year to profit making drug companies like Roche for biomedical research. It is the National Institutes for Health that hands out the free dough. On top of THAT the same companies that make profit center medications that can grow hair on a tomato or put the lead back in a pencil get to deduct 34 percent of their Research and Development costs under federal tax law!

Roche is one of the smiling beneficiaries of governmental check writing. They grossed nearly 30 Billion Dollars in drug sales last year. The US government was one of their biggest buyers. The US military plowed hundreds of millions into the now questionable drug Tamiflu.

The bird flu drug Tamilflu, now known to be ineffective in some bird flu cases , has made hundreds of millions thanks to a panic stricken world that believes the hype that Tamiflu will stave off infection. Yep, I have 100 bucks worth in my 'fridge.

Sales of Herceptin, the only targeted treatment approved for HER2-positive breast cancer, showed enormous profit gains. This, despite a warning by the FDA that Herceptin is damned dangerous as it can cause cardiac problems in a very high percentage of users. It does offer promise for many women, like Ms Yue, and has a growing body of clinical data to back up its efficacy. It is better than the assured alternative--IF you can afford it.

Only one hospital in South China handles the Roche drug trials for Herceptin. Ms Yue cannot get close to affording the treatment. Roche, who I am sure is way too busy counting their money, has not answered a single email from me on how to save her life.

If the government would pay researchers decent enough money to develop life saving drugs and then license the findings back to companies like Roche maybe it would cost less than 60,000 bucks to save a single life. It might help save some lives, and well being, despite zelaous companies fudging on data or getting overwhelmed by the smell of dollars as in the case of Vioxx, Xanax and a host of drugs through the years.

When does profiteering and lack of conscience finally reach the level of criminal negligence? I say jail these scumbags and have them share a cell with their Columbian counterparts.
