OUR SHORT FALL FROM THE MORAL HIGH GROUND IN CHINA

By Lonnie Hodge

DO NOT CLIMB A TREE TO LOOK FOR A FISH.
(Chinese Proverb)

Chinese proverbs fascinate me. I thought it might be fun to do a series of posts, from time to time, on contemporary issues but, begin or end them them with appropriate Chinese proverbs.
Remember when the United States annual report on Human Rights would come out and their would be world press outrage at many countries and some public muttering and debate about the findings? I know, it has been a while.

'DOGGONE

China Issued its own report this week. These days it is a case, on both sides of the ocean of the pot calling the kettle beige: China chides America for detention abuses, increased censorship of the media and Internet, silencing of critics, Muslim profiling, long standing racial discrimination, wire taps and surveillance of citizens, homelessness, poverty, and hypocrisy and double standards on human rights issues. Other than that...

As an expat for the greater part of my life I tend to take a meta-view of America: As far back as 1966, as a military "brat", I was been spat on in Switzerland, had obscenities shouted at me from porches in Germany, and called everything but welcome in Japan just because I was American. But, I believed, as the head-held high-son of a WWII Veteran, that we owned the moral high ground. We were not without fault, but we were a nation to be envied rather than despised.

My mother, a 4'10' fireworks fountain of her own mixed proverbs, might have said: "people in glass houses shouldn't go around naked" in response to the remarks. And how can I post anything more eloquent?

China and America should climb down from their respective perches and go about the business of fishing in some ever darkening waters.
