Writer Bill Cardoso, the journalist who coined the term "gonzo" journalism so closely associated with Hunter Thompson, died a couple of weeks ago. Now comes this curious obituary by Elaine Woo, in the Los Angeles Times, which take as its beginning point the relationship between Cardoso and Thompson. In time, the obituary degenerates into this:
Cardoso died of cardiac arrest Feb. 26 at his home in Kelseyville, about 80 miles northeast of San Francisco, said Mary Miles Ryan, his longtime companion. He was 68, a year older than Thompson was when he killed himself a year ago in a final rebellion.
Thompson's suicide was ... a final rebellion!?
Thompson blew his brains out while he was speaking with his wife on the telephone, with his son and a granchild in the next room. What on earth could possess someone to romanticize that, to attempt to make an exit so shabby, so unmanly, into something heroic? There, in only 3 words, is the nihilism of contemporary leftism personified. You wonder why our culture is disintegrating? There's your answer.
