Netherlands imposes viewing of racy film as part of entrance exam for immigrants

From an Associated Press report: "The camera focuses on two gay men kissing in a park. Later, a topless woman emerges from the sea and walks onto a crowded beach. For would-be immigrants to the Netherlands, this film is a test of their readiness for liberal Dutch culture. If they can't stomach it, no need to apply."

It's a bit irregular, but it couldn't be as bad as making them sit through "Brokeback Mountain." It must be the most unusual component to a country's entrance exam anywhere in the world (not to mention the most amusing, at least for those who aren't violence-prone fanatics of a certain religious faith known for its extreme intolerance). The test has become compulsory for many immigrants to the Netherlands and the film is part of the preparation package, which costs $75.

It sounds reasonable to me, but Dutch theologian Karel Steenbrink criticized the movie, saying it would be offensive to some Muslims. Well, yes, exactly! That's just the point! If they have a problem with this stuff, then maybe they can be deterred from moving there in the first place. Otherwise, they could arrive, experience cultural shock, cop a jihadist attitude and commence to killing infidels.

If that sounds far-fetched, think again. A few weeks after the infamous murder of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh for criticizing Islamic treatment of women, a plot was uncovered that involved a planned attack on Amsterdam's famed Red Light District. The alleged Muslim extremists were said to be furious at the lack of morals in the prostitution zone. No surprise there, given their religious backgrounds. The problem is, their solution was to blow the place up.

If showing a short racy movie can weed out some of these people, then what's the harm in it? In fact, extra popcorn and drinks for everybody.

Amazingly, Mohammed Sini, the chairman of Islam and Citizenship, a national Muslim organization, has defended the Dutch film, saying that homosexuality is "a reality." In other words, you can't change it, so deal with it in some way other than sharia law and/or brutal murder. Wow, a Muslim in a leadership position being a voice of reason. Knock me over with a feather.

In addition, Sini urged all Muslim immigrants "to embrace modernity." Wouldn't it be wonderful if a majority of Muslims were to follow his advice on that one? We could forget about this ballyhooed clash of civilizations and the world could take a huge step forward.

Again, amazing advice from a Muslim leader. But someone not so like-minded is bound to slap a fatwa on his head if he keeps it up.

I thought a fatawa was just a non-binding legal opinion, but hay what ever!
As a Muslim, i disapprove of homosexuality but then I disapprove of lots of damaging things including the effect of alcohol on youth.
Anyway A healthy debate is needed not more immorality. There are plenty of racy films about I really dont think its a good advert for Holland but then a gain it may just a cunning plan to get our attention.
Err Men are men thats the reason women cover not because sometings wrong with women its coz the way us men can be!
can we debate without heavy handedness; there lots to learn on all sides...
