I doubt very much that Ted Rall ...

... will prevail against Ann Coulter in an action for libel, but don't fault him for anger toward her; she maligned him viciously, and he is owed an apology.

Generally, libel is ...
  • Written, not spoken, and ...
  • Defamatory, and ...
  • False.

If the libel causes financial harm, the plaintiff may seek a damage award which compensates for the injury.

During the 'Toon riots, Coulter published the following in one of her weekly columns:

The mass violence by Muslims over some cartoons reminds us why we have to worry when countries like Iran start talking about having nukes. Iran is led by a lunatic who makes a big point of denying the Holocaust. Indeed, in response to the Muhammad cartoons, one Iranian newspaper is soliciting cartoons about the Holocaust. (So far the only submissions have come from Ted Rall, Garry Trudeau and The New York Times.)

The statement is false and, because of its anti-semitic implications, defamatory, but Coulter is a satirist with a vicious streak — not a reporter whose words are supposed to be accepted as literal truth. I paused when I encountered that line, marveling at the bald malice of it, but I never for a second thought that I was supposed to believe it. I doubt that anybody else familiar with Coulter's writing did, either.

It's typical of the reason I've stopped reading her; she isn't funny or even informative any more, so much as the shock-jockette of mean.
