Flat Tax in the UK?

Book Review: Flat Tax - Toward a British Model by Allister Heath

Once talked about only in the rooms of think tanks and policy wonks, flat tax has come out of the closet in recent years in the UK. No longer does it cause terror in the minds of politicians and academics. The reason why this has been the case is that Eastern European countries have been adopting flat tax models left and right, with at least ten of them using it in one form or another. Of course, the fact these countries were formerly communist has led many critics to claim that a flat tax could or should not be adopted in a Western European nation.

Allister Heath is Associate Editor for The Spectator and Deputy Editor for The Business. Mr Heath not only looks at existing plans (both theoretical and already applied) in this book but addresses critics of flat taxes in general and specifically in the UK. Not only that, he comes up with his own plan for this country and its costs in detail.

There are some absolutely choice quotes including this one from Stephen Pollard about flat tax:
"Advocacy of a flat tax presses all the right buttons. It is good for the economy. It is good for the poor. It is good for business. And it is easy to grasp."

And far more worryingly, Heath explains to us that the UK Treasury believes tax relief is taking away their money and as well explains that the Treasury refers to Marx in positive terms for his views on taxation of the populace.

Despite such a heavy subject, the author has a good knack for making this book easy to read. He understands that it is rather unfortunate when one makes a pro-flat tax argument advocating its simplicity in the most complex way possible.

With both the Conservative and Liberal Democrat parties looking into flat tax for their own policy revamps, this book could not be more timely. It arms those in favour of a flat tax with all the intellectual ammunition necessary to defend their points and has enough in it to convince those who are neutral to the subject to the benefits of a flat tax.

This is an excellent treatise on the subject. Let's just hope its title is more of a prediction than a mere hope.
