Ex-Chancellor and current Gas Pipeline President can’t understand all the criticism

Gerhard Schröder, former German Chancellor and recluse who personally coordinated the building of the Baltic Sea gas pipeline with his good old buddy Vladimir Putin, finally won another election again yesterday. He was visibly gratified when chosen to be President (Board Chairman) of the Northern European Gas Pipeline (NEGP) consortium in which the Russian gas giant Gasprom holds the majority stake.

Schröder, elected in the token first round, will also receive the token sum of 250,000 euros annually.

When completed, the controversial gas pipeline will directly connect Russia and Germany and conveniently bypass those nervige (annoying) neighboring Baltic States and will finally be able to furnish the German Chancellery with the gas it so desperately needs since Schröder’s untimely departure. Oh yeah and the natives themselves want the gas, too.

Many Germans actually seem to be upset about the whole matter sort of and have even ventured to, gulp, criticize their former peace-loving Chancellor, who appeared hurt by this and simply can’t understand all the fuss. And when an American journalist raised his hand and asked him about a possible so-called “conflict of interest”, Schröder just shrugged his shoulders and said his English never was all that good (he never understood a word Bush said, for instance) but if you could ask me that question again in Russian or something I’m taking lessons now and I’ll see what I can do.

Bei so vielen Interessen muss es mal zu Konflikten kommen.
