THE VIRTUAL WATER COOLER

by Lonnie Hodge

I AM MAD AS HELL AND I AM NOT TAKING IT ANYMORE

China has some 33 million bloggers. Zounds! And it isn't just the stay-at-home types doing it.

Over 52% of white collar workers have a weblog. And 60% of them trash their boss online. Another 29% of respondents, in three of China's biggest cities, say they intend to start a blog ( Who is going to read these things? ) in the future.

Now, westerners mainly "rant" and "muse" about news politics and an encyclopedia of relational disorders, poopy pants and "love". The average Chinese worker gossips and rags his co-workers and employers.

It is still a bit low in the hierarchy of communication choices. It lags behind "QQ" (ICQ), Other IM services and text messaging.

As an aside: At a speech contest I judged last year several contestants, asked to expound on the world's greatest invention, chose text messaging (I am NOT kidding) and the cell phone. At a recent performance of the Russian Ballet, in an auditorium with no heat and curtains instead of doors (oh how the mighty have...), I quickly stopped counting those tapping their keypads at twenty. While the prima ballerina was struggling to heat her muscles to stay on point the audience was sending "fine and you?" on their phones.

And here is a finally a bit of positive news about Microsoft in China: 41% of white-collar bloggers polled used MSN Spaces to host their blog because: 1. It is free 2. It allows the user to limit access.

Now that is where it differs from the water cooler: Some suck-up cannot report you to your boss unless he has the password!

Ah, freedom.
