THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME (HUMOR)

HUMOR
by LONNIE HODGE

A few years ago (26?) I was duck hunting in Uncertain, Texas. The young men I hunted with were extraordinary sportsmen and could tell a Gadwall from a Merganser at 500 yards and then call them into a duck blind.

One of the hunters called in a flock above us, barely visible, to a spot directly between the two of us.

Everything went into slow motion as I watched his shotgun barrel follow the ducks toward the water. In less than a second I was looking down an ever enlarging 12-gauge tube. I did not have time to say "duck" before the gun went off and I caught dozens of pellets with my chest waders.

It is a phenomenon fliers know very well: It is called Target Fixation. Many pilots have crashed into their prey because they were so intent on getting the perfect shot. No, no Mitsubishi jokes here.

I am not sure why the press has chosen to spend so much time on this hunting incident when the world is still spinning on its axis and moving 5 continents full of important news (seven, depending on where you attended school) at about 1,040 miles an hour.

I am sorry for the man injured and stressed into a coronary but, I do find it a bit amusing that the man at the helm of two major military campaigns can't tell an elephant from a donkey, nor seemingly shoot one if he could.

I propose we put him on Oprah and get him tongue lashed like the lying author of that other monumental news event: The Great Literary Dupe. He might just give up hunting or learn to get his story straight and lots faster.

Me? I quit hunting years ago--about 26 to be exact. Imagine that.

And yes, there really is a place called Uncertain, Texas.
