Mob violence: It works

Citing "outrage" from religious leaders, Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov has refused to issue a permit for a Gay Pride parade, though homosexuality was decriminalized in Russia in 1993.

Earlier this week Chief Mufti Talgat Tadzhuddin warned that Russia's Muslims would stage violent protests if the march went ahead. "If they come out on to the streets anyway they should be flogged. Any normal person would do that - Muslims and Orthodox Christians alike ... [The protests] might be even more intense than protests abroad against those controversial cartoons."

Similar threats must be afoot elsewhere, too, in matters both large and small. Indeed, the anticipation of such threats is enough to provoke self-censorship in many quarters.

The world is going to pay for a long time for its failure to choke this thing in its crib.
