As Jesse J. Holland of the AP reports, "Republicans are counting on their new House leader, John Boehner, to help defuse an ethics scandal as the clock ticks toward November congressional elections."
According to the article, Boehner said, "I think what you're going to see us do is rededicate ourselves to dealing with issues ... Big issues that the American people expect us to deal with, in terms of trying to improve their incomes, their prospects for jobs, and to provide better security for Americans all over this country."
One congressman said Boehner represents a bridge back to "the old Revolution days," a reference to either the days of President Reagan or the 1994 GOP takeover of the House (I couldn't tell).
One thing is for sure - the current Republican administration and Congress have been tainted with scandal after scandal (or perhaps appearance of impropriety, if you want to be nice). Back in 2002 I asked the question, "but will the Republicans work toward smaller government, or will they fall prey to the Leviathan that is the government, and be drunk with their newfound power?"
Of course we all knew that they would not pursue smaller government on any meaningful scale. To Bush's credit, he has proposed small cuts in places in the budget (only to be replaced with larger expenditures elsewhere), but I said "meaningful" in any case. What I didn't realize back then is that apparently they were already blasted. It's just that more recently they've been starting to vomit.
Will they have a hangover soon? The elections in November will tell.
