Iranian cleric says use of nuclear weapons permissible http://www.haaretzdaily.com/hasen/spages/684232.html As if the Iranian president weren't scary enough...and foolish enough to all but invite pre-emptive attack by the civilized world, a senior Iranian cleric (an ayatollah) has now said publicly that the use of nuclear weapons is permitted under Islamic law. Also, Iranians are signing up to become "martyrs", i.e. homicide bombers, against US and British targets, given the opportunity. The threat of Iranian weapons and Iranian-sponsored terrorism make Kim Jong Il and the Bird Flu look like good news. My guess is that the Iranians are mistakenly calculating that the western world will fracture, like it did over Iraq, when it comes time for action. But between the clear difference between wondering about WMD in Iraq and Iran's saying they have started uranium enrichment, the situations are not comparable. Add to that the wake-up call the Europeans just had from the protests over the cartoons, and Iran is inviting a serious response.
