The Houston Chronicle reports about the Houston Police Department Chief saying "surveillance cameras monitored by police could be installed ... in an effort to deter crime in the downtown area."
Although the project is still in the "planning stages," Harold Hurtt (the HPD Chief) said he "hopes to have a least five cameras up this year," according to the Chronicle.
Hurtt had the following to say:
I don't think anyone in this room believes we can afford to hire enough officers to put one on every corner, but we can have cameras to relay activity to the authorities
No, Mr. Hurtt. But we might believe you could hire enough officers to put on every other (or third or fourth or whatever) corner. And then we might expect they would walk or ride a bike or use a patrol car to get around. No one imagines they'd stand around like hookers. Eres pinche flojo, seƱor Hurtt?
Said Hurtt, "Once you buy the equipment and you put it in place and you have a maintenance contract in place, I would think it would be less expensive then paying officers to stand on those corners." Duhhhh, yah think?
"I think people are upset when people are robbed and killed on the streets of Houston and there is a lot of controversy about that," he said. "We are trying to respond to that. I don't see a lot of people standing up and saying tax me for public safety."
I'm saying it! Tax me for public safety and give me a refund on all the other BS you government people spend my money on!
Also according to the Chronicle, Hurtt "talked about plans to change the city's curfew law to 10 p.m. for juveniles on school nights." Are you retarded? What about the concerts? Let kids' parents decide when they should be in, even on school nights. It worked fine for me.
And finally, to the meat of the matter. In response to the concern about privacy with cameras up all over the place, Hurtt said "I know a lot of people are concerned about big brother, but my response to that is if you aren't doing anything wrong why worry about it."
I don't do anything wrong on the toilet. Put cameras in there and watch me take a dump. What happens if I'm not doing anything illegal but I'm doing something someone considers wrong? Maybe my boss doesn't like drinkers and a camera catches me walking out of a bar. His friend at the police departments clues him in and I get fired for some BS reason. There's a multitude of reasons to be concerned about cameras, and not all of them are because you're breaking the law. Stop being lazy and do your job.
I don't do anything wrong in my bedroom either. Why don't we put cameras in there and make a porno? I'm not pretty, so it'd be a colossal waste of taxpayer money, but hey ... I'm not worried.

Anyone who thinks they aren't on a cam most of the day are naive. I would much rather have a police official who is responsible to the citizens than the "rent a cops" in all the buildings who can do ANYTHING they want with their surveillance, like show it at parties, publish it to the web, etc..
