The German two-class system Anyway, the German “leadership” has done the math and checked the demographics and realized that they only have three options available to them; they either have to drastically cut unemployment, cut retirement benefits right now and reform the system entirely, or leave everything as it is and just raise the retirement age. Well, leaders generally being just that and having backbone and hating compromise, and in this case not having the slightest clue how to cut unemployment or reform their system, well, they decided to take the easy way out and just go for the third option. Who would have expected that? If, however, you are one of the privileged natives who not only has work (being employed is a privilege here) but has work at a company called Volkswagen, you will soon be able to retire at the age of 58. It’s a two-class system here, you see. There are those who have a job and those who don’t. If you fall into the second category you will find yourself standing before a giant wall (picture the Berlin Wall) and you will find it very difficult to climb back over again. The scientist guys say that's because the price of hiring new people in Germany is simply too high. And now its going that way with retirement, I guess. But at least while you are trying to climb over that wall here, or waiting to retire, you can spend your leisure minutes criticizing that awful American system with its awful amerikanische Verhältnisse (American conditions) where everyone supposedly works at McDonalds but where strangely, everyone seems to have work. So, like, actually there's always something to do. PS: Don't worry, though. Only a fraction of the natives actually work until they are 65 now. What the actual-factual retirement age will be is anybody's guess.
