Emory research concludes political debate is useless This was determined by observing the brain activity of test subjects under a magnetic resonance imaging scanner, which revealed that the parts of their brains used to sort facts and make rational decisions showed no activity during the exercises performed in the study. So what is the upshot of this? For one thing, it makes all the political shout shows on television and radio nothing more than abrasively irritating exercises in futility. But let's look at a more concrete example of the riches that can be mined from the Emory research. Let's say you support the war in Iraq because you have reasoned that ousting a mass murdering dictator and bringing democracy to that country is a morally good thing to do and will help to ultimately stabilize the region and reduce terrorism. The response of the liberal antiwar Democrat you're debating is that Bush is a psychotic war criminal and war never solved anything. So you mention how it actually has solved quite a lot, like giving America its independence, freeing the slaves, and defeating Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan after they had plunged the entire world into a maelstrom of destruction and genocide. Your debating opponent's response then is that Bush lied, people died. Now, according to the Emory research, you and your debating partner were both irrational as you debated.
