Cartoonish cacophony continues from Casablanca to Kupang But then, when you learn that it was extremist Muslims offended by something-or-other, you laugh, you shrug it off and you think, oh yeah, now it makes sense. You may not have the slightest idea what it’s about, but you’re no longer flabbergasted or even mildly surprised. Finally, when you hear that the rioting and the threats and the flag-burning and the angry chants are because of a cartoon caricature of the Prophet Muhammad that originally appeared in a Danish newspaper, you are once again mildly astonished and wonder how so many people can be prisoners of such a mentality even into the 21st century. Suffice it to say, this brouhaha isn't happening because something is rotten in Denmark, but rather because something is rotten in a large swath of the planet stretching from Casablanca to Khartoum to Karachi to Kubang. It's a potent mixture of religious fanaticism, ignorance and resentment of the West's superior position in the world and it is absolutely anathema to the advance of Islamic civilization. In fact, as long as those two words -- "Islamic" and "civilization" -- are considered inseparable in that part of the world, there may not be a whole lot of advances coming down the pike anytime soon. Judging from the cartoonish kerfuffle that has so many Muslim minds absurdly preoccupied, it appears that Islamic fanaticism and progress just don't seem to mix.
