NASA Asking For Volunteers

In the wake of the successful Stardust landing on Sunday, NASA now has a million or so grains of comet dust that they hope will give them a glimpse into the formation of the universe. What's the problem? They need human eyes to view the material, which will be sent to Houston's Johnson Space Center.

In a new program reminiscent of the SETI@Home Project, which let private home computer users volunteer their computer's "idle time" to analyze data, the Stardust@Home project seeks volunteers who will agree to look at particles of dust and discover anomalies. Particles that are flagged by a citizen researcher will be submitted to others for their opinion, and after several layers of human analysis will be brought to the attention of NASA scientists.

Without the help of citizens and distributed computing, NASA estimates it could take 20 years to go through the material brought back by the comet probe.

Those interested in volunteering are asked to provide their email address at the site for NASA project personnel to contact.
