The latest sign of the Apocolypse This is not a funny story. This is a report that states that certain people CANNOT - WILL NOT - THINK! This is a report that states certain people will not think objectively about their candidate. They will not harbour the idea that their candidate might be wrong. Wrong about anything. No matter what proof is offered. And these people are the people who run the campaigns, put up the signs, write the blogs. No wonder they all seem one sided. No wonder none of the most partisan bloggers, on either side, ever says "Wow. I guess I was wrong about this." This study implies that these people are incapable of such changes in opinion. This study states that these people cannot view evidence objectively. They only feel emotions. Loyalty towards their champion, or anger against his detractors. While I'm not arguing against SmallTownHick's main point--i.e., that many people don't think, but rather feel their way through life, he overlooks the fact that emotions are inherently faster-acting than intellectual consideration; they even work in tandem with the intellectualization process, providing a first response to already-intellectualized judgments. For example, we learn from an early age to think of puppies as cute and lovable; we react with disgust at the mere mention of eating them. But historically some American Indian tribes (among other cultures worldwide) have (or had) no such reaction; the mention of "tasty puppy stew" would simply have their mouths watering as they looked to see where the chow line starts.
