Hamas wins, democracy loses So, it's official. The terrorist organization Hamas wins the Palestinian parliamentary elections. Apparently, the voters were in a throw-the-bums-out kind of mood and wanted an alternative to the ruling Fatah Party's corruption and ineffectiveness. Unfortunately for the voters, Hamas isn't likely to lead them down the garden path to peace and prosperity either, seeing as how its all-consuming focus is the destruction of Israel. It's definitely fuel for pessimists who question the Arab world's readiness and ability to function responsibly in a democratic system. You can almost hear the new antiwar talking points now: If you give them democracy and this is what they do with it, then what are we fighting for in Iraq? On the other hand, since so many antiwar types are anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian, maybe they'll see the Hamas victory as a good thing. Or maybe it will completely go over their heads. Or maybe . . . Who the heck knows how their cognitive faculties will perceive and then spin it? The only certainty is that they'll still be against the U.S. effort to spread freedom in the Middle East. Being 72 years old, I remember well when Harry Truman endorsed the new Israeli government and helped it achieve legitimacy. I was, as most people were at that time, overjoyed at the prospect of a Jewish country and still support Israel. It is truly a beacon of democracy in that part of the world. Having said that, I urge that we not forget that most of the people who formed that government were regarded by the British government as brigands, murderers and, yes, terrorists, which they certainly were. Is it just possible that those who now legitimately lead Palestine might undergo the same metamorphosis?
Just a thought.
