Fixing the Vote Voter reform. In Starship Troopers (the book, not that forgettable movie), one of the key ideas is that one has to BECOME a voter - it isn't automatic. Not only that, but you have to earn the vote, by volunteering for government service. It is not mandatory - you can get a job, a license, even become a CEO without the vote - but, if you want to run for office, change the laws, or vote in an election, you have to show that you're more than a dilettante. You have to WANT the vote. America's Founding Fathers did not want universal suffrage - they limited the vote to (a) landowners and (b) professionals, like doctors; people who had educations and a stake in the community. Perhaps it's time to reinstate limited suffrage. Limit the vote to people willing to take a course in school, or a current events test at the polls. Limit the vote to those willing to work at getting it, and leave the vast number of people who aren't even voting now, out of the loop. Maybe we can even go the whole Heinlein route - limit the vote to those willing to take a one year volunteer assignment from their government. It would give the would-be voters a chance to see how government works, meet the people they are going to choose between, and make the election process less of a rich man's popularity contest than it is right now. Why don't we start a Poll Tax. Or better yet, limit the vote to white male landolders so the elite that control the country won't have to lie during elections to convince the rest of us that they are good and not evil.
I guess I should have seen this coming. I specifically said TEST, in order to forstall problems (and comments) of this kind, but I guess that it was not to be.
Fine. Any system that will allow a person who (a) WANTS to vote, and (b) knows the issues, to vote, gets MY vote.
