Drowning in illusions

Oh happy day. Another tape from an al-Qaeda leader in hiding. This time it's Osama sidekick Ayman al-Zawahri and apparently he's hoppin' mad about that recent near miss he had with some U.S. missiles in Pakistan. Complaining about some "innocents" who were killed in the strike, he called President Bush a "butcher." How do you like that? A terrorist criticizing someone else for killing innocents. We all engage in hypocrisy on occasion, but give me a break.

Zawahri went on to say: "My second message is to the American people, who are drowning in illusions. I tell you that Bush and his gang are shedding your blood and wasting your money in frustrated adventures." But who is really "drowning in illusions" here, the American people or the turbaned maniac hiding in a cave who believes he can set up a vast, medieval caliphate and stop the inexorable march of human progress? The American people or the guy who believes that the creator of the infinite universe rewards suicide bombers with voluptuous virgins in paradise?

Zawahri also called Bush a "failure," but that begs the question: If Bush is such a failure, then why is Osama now calling for a truce? About that truce, Zawahri said: "The lion of Islam, Shiek Osama bin Laden . . . offered you a decent exit from your dilemma."

Dilemma? What dilemma? News flash to Zawahri: The lion of Islam is in permanent hibernation and the official policy of the U.S. not negotiating with terrorists still stands.
