DREAM THIEVES

I once heard a man boast that security personnel and devices were meant to keep honest people honest. He said, as a thief, that the higher you built the walls, the more rungs he would build into his ladder.
The new toughening of immigration standards, since INS became part 0f Homeland Insecurity, has bred a new and heartless criminal element: Dream Stealers.

Many men and women denied a chance to properly immigrate to, or remain in the U.S., have resorted to hucksters that would not know a true human emotion, besides greed, unless it firmly bit them in the ass.
Recent dream stealers that have been busted in America are a fraction of the scum out there. One woman in Salt Lake City was recently busted for representing herself as an INS agent and fleecing hundreds of wanna be residents by claiming she could cut through red tape and reduce waiting times from years to months for a green card. Pavlini Lopez collected $1,500 a pop from people waiting sometimes as long as 8-9 hours to see her for assistance. Maybe it was the time delay and not the false ID card that convinced them she was truly working for the government.
Last month in Queens, NY, twenty-one people were indicted in a fake ID scam that was netting them a cool million dollars a year. Social Security, phony Green Cards and Driver's Licenses were their main source of revenue.
While the above case involved deceit on the part of both parties the next group, busted last month, may have had a few unwitting participants in a marriage fraud racket.
In Orange County, California 44 were Indicted for arranging sham marriages primarily for Asian aliens. Most of those arrested were Vietnamese from an area known as "Little Saigon" They schemed to obtain fraudulent immigrant visas for hundreds of Chinese and Vietnamese nationals based on bogus marriages to U.S. citizens. The indictments, last month, stemmed from a three-year, multi-agency investigation known as Operation “Newlywed Game.”
Allegedly, the fraud involved a network of “facilitators,” “recruiters,” and “petitioners.” At the heart of the conspiracy were the facilitators, who charged up to $60,000 to arrange marriages for foreign nationals with U.S. citizens for the purpose of securing immigrant visas for the aliens.
The facilitators frequently used recruiters, who about $1,000 for each referral, to identify U.S. citizens willing to marry aliens and submit immigration petitions to the government. The U.S. citizen petitioners were paid thousands of dollars, plus travel expenses.
Since the foreigners often resided in Vietnam or China, the facilitators would then make arrangements for the U.S. citizen petitioners to go overseas to marry the aliens. After the fake marriage, and one wonders how many of them were actually known to be fakes by the spouse-to-be, the facilitators helped the petitioners and aliens fill out and file the necessary documents. The facilitators would also coach petitioners and aliens on what to say at subsequent Homeland Security interviews to persuade officials that the marriage was legit'.
What got them busted was a series of record checks that showed that many of the petitioners had more than one spouse.
These people have made it bad for everyone in a time of paranoia and restrictive immigration practices in America. As an example, Ms. Yue, who wanted to visit America was denied a visa because she was labeled an "overstay risk" despite not speaking English, having a job offer and letter of hire IN CHINA by an American company, a sick mother and father, a son in Shanghai and late stage breast cancer. She just wanted one look beyond the borders of China while she still could travel.
These people are stealing from America, those who might benefit America, and the brave souls who still believe in the American Dream.
