Carlie Brucia's Mom Arrested

Drugs and prostitution -- and more to come

Susan Schorpen's eleven year old daughter, Carlie Brucia was abducted, sexually assaulted and strangled by Joseph Smith February 1, 2004. The abduction was recorded by a car wash surveillance camera, and Smith was just recently found guilty. The jury recommended death and his sentencing is set for February 13.

Susan has had her share of problems with law enforcement over the years. She's been arrested twice. And Sarasota deputies have made 69 trips to the home of Susan Schorpen since 1992 -- that's not counting any visits regarding Carlie's abduction or murder.

This year, though, things are looking especially grim for Susan -- we're only 21 days into the first month of the year and already:

  • January 4, Susan cashed an $800 check that her father wrote to pay for her drug treatment in a residential program.
  • She also stole cash, credit cards and a ring worth $5,000 from her father.

  • They were still looking for her about all that and then:

  • January 18, Susan was arrested during an an anti-prostitution operation. She was observed walking up to cars, attracting the attention of drivers and getting into at least one vehicle. She was arrested about 10 pm in a vehicle after she'd exposed herself to an undercover police officer.
  • Upon being arrested, she was also found to be in the possession of crack cocaine.

  • Susan has reportedly fought drug addiction for years, and was being held Friday in lieu of $5,250 bail. She told police that she was homeless. According to the arrest report, she has a 'Carlie' tattoo with a butterfly on her right shoulder.

It might be easy to blame all this on Carlie's murder if not for those 69 other visits and two previous arrests. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Google It!]
