American Journalist Kidnappers Make Demands

According to video footage aired by Al-Jazeera, the kidnappers of American journalist Jill Carroll are demanding the release of all female Iraqi prisoners, threatening to kill Carroll if their demands are not met.

The tape showed the 28-year-old reporter sitting in front of a white background and speaking, but her voice could not be heard. On the tape, Carroll is pale and appears tired, and her long straight brown hair is parted in the middle and pulled back from her face.

Jill Carroll is a reporter for the Christian Science Monitor, and was kidnapped in Baghdad on 7 January while on her way to interview Adnan al-Dulaimi, a prominent Sunni Arab. Her interpreter was killed during the abduction, but Carroll's Iraqi driver escaped unharmed.

While White House spokesman Sean McCormack said the United States is doing everything possible to ensure Carroll's safe return, he declined commenting further, "including about whether the United States would consider meeting the demands as aired in the broadcast." The United States' current policy is not to negotiate with terrorists. Moderate Voice says, "The likelihood of governments giving in to terrorist demands — particularly large ones such as this — is always bleak."

Carroll had been reporting for various media organizations from the Middle East for the last three years before becoming a freelancer with the Christian Science Monitor.

Although no group has stepped forward publicly to claim responsibility for the kidnapping, Al-Jazeera refuses to disclose how they obtained the tape.
