Addictive Drugs Are Over-Prescribed To Sleep Deprived, Elderly, And Public Health Recipients According to a professor of Pharmacy at Ohio State University, older patients and patients on publicly funded health care are overprescribed an addictive drug to treat sleep disorders. Some of the most common pharmaceuticals to treat insomnia and sleep disorders are Ambien, Sonata, and Trazodone, but according to Prof. Rajesh Balkrishnan, who conducted the study, the most vulnerable clients like elderly and public health recipients are prescribed Benzodiazepines. A quick search on WebMD shows that Benzodiazepines are used to treat bipolar disorders and restless leg syndrome but carry a laundry list of side-effects and are addictive. Prof. Balkrishnan goes on to note that, "A person can develop a strong psychological and physical dependence on these drugs (Benzodiazepines) in a short time, and experience severe withdrawal-like symptoms once he stops taking the medication," Balkrishnan said. He found that psychiatrists were four times more likely to prescribe newer, non-benzodiazepine drugs for insomnia than family practice and internal medicine doctors. "Psychiatrists may be more informed than other kinds of doctors about newer, non-benzodiazepine drugs," Balkrishnan said. "Or psychiatrists may see patients with more complex problems in whom other therapies such as over-the-counter medications have failed."
