At no stage in my article did I say that British soldiers are or were cowards. Far from it, I sympathise with their plight - undermined as they are by "politically correct" rules of engagement which is the primary cause of their being defeated in Basra.

"Charlie" has read my comments exactly as they were meant. I fear that consequences of this humiliating defeat at Basra places our soldiers in even greater danger than they were before. That is because our enemies will no longer have respect for our military. (This was not helped by the humiliation of the Royal Navy by the Iranians earlier this year. At the time I predicted that shameful debacle would lead to greater danger for our troops - and so it has proved.)

Miss Carlyon,

I don't believe Mr. Davies was attempting to be funny. His point, it seems to me, is that such behavior on the part of the British - or any - military may well result in the loss of many more lives both military and civilian. Your daughter's service is to be commended. In fact, she and her colleauges are due far better than the riduiculous turn tail sellout just performed by the British government.

As for why your daughter and the rest of the British and U.S. military were in Iraq in the first place, I recommend you re-read UN Resolution 1441 and the innumerable "resolutions" preceding it which it was issued to enforce.

Cheers,

Charlie

My daughter was out in Basra last year - your comments are not funny. The British are not cowards and this is not defeat. We should never have supported Bush in America's war in the first place. Most of Britain was against it as the peace march showed. The whole episode has achieved nothing and it is about time we all pulled out and left them to it. The people of Iraq do not want us there and what exactly are we doing by staying. Just getting more of our service personel killed not to mention interpreters working for us. My daughter spoke of the Iraq people who worked at Basra Air Station with great affection, she said that they were risking their lives to help us. Do not undermine the efforts of the British Army.
