U.S. Rank on Press Freedom Slides Lower

Well, as the old joke goes, freedom of the press belongs to those who own one. Curious and amusing thing in this article is no mention of how threats of Muslim violence, or at least, Muslim wounded feelings prevented just about every major American media outlet from actually showing the dreaded Danish Mohammed Cartoons o’ Doom , and revealing them to be about two or three degrees less biting than last weeks’ “Family Circle”. So much for the American people’s priceless right to know, right?

Nothing about Plamegate, or revealing the Swift program, nothing about local stringers filing blatantly fraudulent stories and photoshopped and staged offerings…. Nothing about how bloggers are fact-checking stuff like that from here to there and back again? Nothing about Greg Packer the one-stop-man-in-the-street for reporters seeking that man-in-the-street take on whatever it is? Nothing about the fact that a dismaying number of Americans rate news reporters well below used car salesmen when it comes for respecting their profession? That the TV news anchor can be lampooned a la Ron Burgundy? Nope, if all is not well for the press, it must all be the fault of the Bush administration. Can someone please call them a whaaaaambulance?
