Let us hope Mr. Clooney will investigate Nestlé continued aggressive marketing of baby foods a little further and give the boycott his support. Nestlé's Global Public Affairs Manager acknowledged in April 2007 that Nestlé is 'widely boycotted', but we need greater support to compel Nestlé to abide by the baby food marketing requirements adopted by the World Health Assembly. It can do so when forced by legislation to comply, but where it can get away with it, puts its own profits before health. Find out the latest on the situation at:

Unfortunately, Hollywood stars are simply not well-informed enough to be spokespersons for any cause. They are entertainers, not activists, unless they have practice in this latter role as a matter of conviction from a young age, along with the savvy and education to match. For it requires education to, genuinely, advocate a cause. While I know little about George Clooney's educational credentials, I am naturally skeptical as to his ability to process information about the full ramifications of the global economy and his link to oligopolistic practices of many sorts (Nestlé to be sure, but Hollywood itself is a cultural juggernaut which obliterates foreign attempts at self-affirmation. Perhaps people will find this frivolous, but self-identity is anything but frivolous. In fact, it is quite vital to action of any kind, including political and economic action.) As a result, I would, quite simply, not expect anything from him or take him seriously as any kind of example of political and economic reality. This could be the sanest way to view the situation.

Ms. Reyes,

Why didn't you write a column about all the millions of dollars George Clooney has raised for people in Darfur and the documentary film that he and his father risked their lives to make?

It's easy for you to sit at your desk and judge people by typing on your computer, but what have *you* ever done, Nancy Reyes, that helped people on the level that George Clooney has, besides your buying of a different brand of coffee or baby formula? I think you're the hypocrite.
