To the too long list of things that anger and frustrate Muslims in this world (with the not infrequent result of mindless mayhem), here is something new. Now they’re ticked off about the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
But wait a minute, you’re probably thinking. That’s six years away. What could they possibly have to be mad about already?
Here’s a clue: In 2012, Ramadan will take place from July 21 to August 20. Enough said? That’s right, the Olympics are smack in the middle of Ramadan and that puts Muslim athletes at a disadvantage because of their need to fast from sunup to sundown.
That’s funny, Ramadan never seems to hinder Islamic terrorists’ ability to wage zealous and effective jihad, but to be fair, that isn’t yet an Olympic event.
Anyway, isn’t late July into August approximately when most non-winter Olympic Games are held? I mean, that’s why they’re called the summer Olympics. If it’s never been a particular problem before, then why now, or, that is, why 2012?
There are a couple of possible reasons. First, because the Islamic calendar is based on a lunar cycle, the holy month of Ramadan gets earlier by around 11 days each year. Therefore, it could have been over 30 years ago since it would have even been an issue and there might not have been that many Muslims interested in the Olympics at that time to make a stink about it.
But here’s the more likely reason: sheer Islamic effrontery. In 2012, the Games are being held in London–or Londonistan, as it is frequently called, due to the fact that the place is teeming with Muslims, many of whom tend toward the radical. You may have noticed that in this day and time, Muslims, radical or not, who have “colonized†Western countries are making their presence known by demanding that the host countries bend over backwards to accommodate their Muslimness.
So, the 2012 Olympics will be held in London and London is full of Muslims who are full of moxie and believe that Islam is the absolute living end. Something has to give and as events have recently shown, the “colonizers†don’t generally just go away quietly.
Sure, the Olympics are a product of Western civilization and host countries shouldn’t have to appease members of another civilization that is both alien and hostile to their own. But hey, it’s the multicultural way, even if the host culture is endlessly denigrated, and even attacked, by the colonizing culture.
Don’t be surprised if the official 2012 Olympics schedule gets changed. Whether it does or not, though, a good way to assuage the feelings of Islamic Londoners would be to build a giganto-normous Mosque right beside the Olympic complex in time for the opening ceremonies, as is being proposed.
“It will be something never seen before in this country. It is a mosque for the future as part of the British landscape,†said Abdul Khalique, senior member of Tablighi Jamaat, a worldwide Islamic missionary group that is proposing the mosque as its new UK headquarters. (I have a feeling that by mid-century the British landscape will be absolutely teeming with the edifices and trappings of the Islamic faith, but that’s another column.)
It’s worth noting that Tablighi Jamaat has come under Western scrutiny since 9/11 as a possible recruiting ground for al-Qaeda. That being the case, who in their right mind wants this group parked and headquartered right next to the Olympic complex?
The presence of such a grand mosque might — and I emphasize “might†— actually serve as a physical deterrent to terrorists who would otherwise like to blow the Olympics to kingdom come. Symbolically, however, it would be anathema to the civilization that conceived and has traditionally carried out the Games.
But getting back to the future, 2012, some Muslim countries such as Turkey are calling for the dates of the Olympics to be changed. Togay Bayalti, president of the National Olympic Committee of Turkey, said: “This will be difficult for Muslim athletes. It would be nice for the friendship of the Games if they had chosen a different date.â€
Yeah, right. It would also be nice if Muslims who live in the West would stop bellyaching about everything under the non-Islamic sun. Even nicer would be if those who do the most bellyaching would just go back to the Islamic utopias from whence they came where everything gets done just so, as prescribed by this medieval religion so at odds with the rest of the world.
If you want to talk about what really puts Muslims at a disadvantage, it’s not an Olympics during Ramadan. It’s Ramadan itself and the blind adherence to a religion that seems utterly incompatible with modernity as well as all other cultures and faiths.
But since Islam ain’t going away anytime soon, here’s a suggestion. If Muslims have a problem with Olympic scheduling, they should just create their own Islamolympics. I’ll skip the gratuitous jokes about medal events in jihad and martyrdom. Just be sure and hold those games in one of the paradisiacal countries that dot the huge swath of the planet effectively controlled by Islam.
