You've got it right. Moderates are on the down-slope, and conservatives are rising. Huckabee demonstrated existing support, and Paul proved that his campaign is growing by leaps and bounds. Brownback did well. But, when Sam's fans learn more about him, they'll look for a stronger candidate. Tancredo had a great showing, but it was probably the climax of his campaign. Fred Thompson revealed a lack of enthusiasm for his bid. Giuliani is still strong. He will hold onto his supporters - who favor his anti-2nd amendment, pro-illegal immigrant, pro-choice positions. I think Romney had a poor showing. If you're spending an alleged $2,000 per vote, you should do better than he did. Perhaps if he had a more conservative track record...

Tancredo is going to stay in. Cox is a non-factor. He isn't campaigning outside of Illinois or Iowa. Hunter should call it quits. T. Thompson probably will. I don't think the perceived lower tier candidates are going to get any additional debate time, once Thompson enters the race. If the networks Democratic coverage is any indicator, they are tilting their coverage towards the top people no matter how many other candidates are around. Look for Fred Thompson, Giuliani, and Romney to be the ones sucking up all the air time. (This is the part that I hate most about the debates).

Ron Paul's showing was exactly what the campaign projected. It was neither strong nor unexpected. A strong showing would have been a top 3, or 2000 votes. The campaign wanted a middle of the pack finish and that is exactly what they got. Remember, if Giuliani, Thompson, and McCain would have participated the rest of the candidates would have finished lower. As with any candidate, some supporters are never happy unless anything written them is a glowing love fest. The Paul people wanted to finish in the middle and they did. What else is there to say?

I'm proud of Ron Paul's showing. I think Ron Paul's campaign is going to surprise more people. We're talking about a 1,300 voter difference between 2nd place and 6th place...that's a pretty tight race. Thompson, Tancredo, Cox, and Hunter are probably going to call it quits. This gives Dr. Paul more debate time. I think he can still upset some people.

Ron Paul came in with a surprising 9.1% of the vote after being dismissed by the mass media as 'oddball', 'looney', 'crank' and 'obviously will not win the nomination'.

His strong showing in the Iowa Straw Poll merits mention in your article.
