There have been a couple of interesting news pieces written this week, one of which ran in the New York Times today, that pointed out how many political observers will be watching the performance of Rep. Ron Paul in the Iowa straw poll on Saturday to see if he can translate his Internet support into people casting a ballot in person. Dr. Paul is seemingly at a disadvantage because he doesn’t believe in the practice of giving out free tickets to his supporters to the Iowa straw poll in Ames, but some of the other campaigns including Sam Brownback and Mitt Romney have been buying tickets by the thousands and giving them away to supporters.
However, the Ames straw poll is really just a fundraiser for the state’s Republican Party. The rules for the poll are very loose. Once a person either has a ticket, or pays their $35 entry fee, they can vote for anyone they want. This means that although the Paul campaign only purchased the minimum requirement of 800 tickets, Rep. Paul could have a much better showing if he supporters are able to take advantage of his competitors’ generosity. As the New York Times story pointed out, the Romney campaign is providing a free ticket and bus service to the poll, so an industrious Paul supporter created a flier and posted in Iowa and on the Internet. In part the flier said, “Some say if Mitt is willing to bus Iowans to Ames for the straw poll, they should take him up on his offer!”
The Iowa straw poll may not count towards electing the next president, but a poor showing can force a candidate out of the race. In 1999, four Republicans dropped out of the race after doing poorly in the straw poll, and this year Tommy Thompson has already vowed to quit the race if he does poorly tomorrow. The current edition of the straw poll is seriously weakened by the fact that John McCain, Fred Thompson, and Rudy Giuliani all declined to participate. All indications are that there is a strong possibility that Mitt Romney might be a run away winner tomorrow, but it will be interesting to see if the guerrilla style grassroots effort of the Paul supporters can lead him to a respectable showing. If Paul finishes 4-6 that would represent a good showing for him, and even the campaign itself is stressing that they would be happy with a middle of the pack finish.
Mitt Romney is looking to use the straw poll as proof that he is for real. Tancredo, Duncan, and Thompson need something positive to keep them in the race. Candidates like Huckabee and Brownback are looking for momentum to break away from the pack, but a strong showing by Ron Paul would go a long way towards silencing the critics who think of his campaign as an Internet novelty act. I consider the Iowa straw poll kind of like reality TV. It is fun to watch, but it doesn’t really bear much of a resemblance to an actual election. I think campaigns get too hung up on it, and spend way more money than they should for something that doesn’t count, but Ron Paul is in a good position here. The expectations are low, so if he does anything at all, he will generate a bit more media buzz for his campaign. He really has everything to gain and nothing to lose on Saturday.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackThis article makes it seem like because Dr. Paul didn’t buy more tickets, any votes past 800 will be from votes bought by the other campains. What? Can’t people buy their own tickets? If Ron Paul wins or comes in 2nd, it will because people voted for him. Not because he bought the mininum tickets to be involved, not because Romney spread his money around and Paul supporters used FREE tickets with no strings attached, not because the infamous Diebold election machines were used…but IN SPITE of all that Ron Paul will get top placement because people will go to get lengths to vote for him. We are inspired and in awe of an honest politician.
Talk about a novelty act, …The Iowa Straw poll is like an olympic political carnival. Interesting facts from wikipedia…The Iowa Straw Poll is a straw poll that takes place in Ames, Iowa on a Saturday in August of years in an election cycle in which the Republican presidential nomination is undecided (that is, in years without an incumbent Republican President running for re-election). Though several different pre-Iowa Caucus straw polls take place in Iowa, the Ames Straw Poll is by far the most prominent one of them, because it draws voters from all over the state rather than just the local area, and is thus also commonly known as the Iowa Straw Poll. The Ames Straw Poll was first held in 1979.
On a more local level, the Ames Straw Poll gives a major boost to the local economy. Thousands of people, including journalists, campaign staffers, and voters, arrive in town around the time of the poll. The Ames Straw Poll is one of the Iowa Republican Party’s most lucrative fundraising events.
…you know every voter in the town is probably treated like a customer on a used car lot. …or as if they’re shopping at the flea market. …or as if they’re looking at some vacation property in Florida.
Go Ron Paul!
I feel like the main stream media and the republican party is blocking or boycotting Ron Paul. I am a life long Republican. I am also an Iraqi War veteran and disabled veteran. Is this America or a conspiracy state. He is the only candidate. The rest are all the same. I can’t tell the difference between Democrats and Republicans any more. I beg you please help Ron Paul save our great Republic. To me my friends and family he is our only and best hope. For our children, for our future, we must have a tomorrow . The country cannot go on as is. I beseech to more robustly cover this great American. Restorer of the Republic and possibly one of the last defenders of the Constitution.
Sincerely,
RFD
I’d bet my money on Ron Paul coming in at least 2nd.
He drew enough supporters to the tax debate that they managed to outnumber the audience listening to all other candidates.
It took the crowd more than 20 minutes to file, in an orderly-shouting parade grouped more or less naturally, with a width of 3-6 people.

Video of Ron Paul’s supporters in Iowa, making a showing.
You can be assured every eligible voter present will have found a way to go, or at least tried their absolute best, and many would have car-pooled, and still others would bring more friends. We are talking about people that in some cases had to give up something virtually essential in order to make it to the poll and vote.
I think the outcrying of support will be very interesting, it is great when people unite in a single honest and passionate cause, it is even better when others see the true passion and can learn to investigate why people love him.
The 5th. place finish in the Iowa straw poll should be an encouragement to Ron Paul and his suppporters. Just a few weeks ago the news was ” Who’s Ron Paul?”
Now the news is different. The media, reluctantly, are beginning to recognize that he has a message that most Americans like. I think the motivation is there and the momentum is building for a good run for the GOP nomination.
Exit polls showed ron paul had over 5,000 votes but the FAULTY Electronic voting machines had to be FIXED then it showed Ron Paul as only ~ 1000 votes THIS IS FRAUD PEOPLE WAKE UP.. paper doesn’t lie!
We need an investigation for this poll. This is serious if they “the globalists” cheat the polls now surely we can’t trust them in a national poll
There better not be any corruption with this election or the American will be marching in the streets all over America.
