The old saying that the police never are there when you need them is taking on new meaning that unfortunately is literal here in North Carolina.  At least six officers in the state capital of Raleigh now are under criminal investigation and over 100 more there under internal-affairs investigation for inappropriate off-duty work.  What that means for the six reportedly means doing off-duty work while on-duty.  Wire stories have carried the coverage all over central North Carolina.
Unfortunately, such situations aren’t new to this state at all.  A Greensboro officer recently previously under investigation for alleged such off-duty work while on-duty alleged “racism” during an internal-affairs investigation there.  That controversy led to then-police-chief David Wray being forced out of his job.  And it all happened while the Greensboro Police Department has been chronically shorthanded.
