I don’t think anyone would argue that Republicans haven’t faltered lately. The war in Iraq isn’t going as well as planned, spending still rages out of control, Social Security hasn’t been touched, etc. This is, therefore, a prime opportunity for Democrats to strike.
But they haven’t been able to communicate a cohesive agenda that will promote American interests and values. The results of a Barron’s magazine analysis indicate that, while the Republicans will lose seats, they will retain control of both houses of Congress.
It’s really not clear who this is good news for. The Democrats, obviously, would prefer to win more seats (some have predicted this will happen). And even conservatives would like to see the Republicans held accountable for their failures — Republicans will not promote (and have not promoted) conservative causes if conservatives will vote for them no matter what.
I’ve previously argued that a Democrat could do well by picking a major conservative cause — like war management, spending or immigration — while keeping the rest of the typical liberal platform. Now it’s probably too late.
