The long anticipated 7th Harry Potter book by author J. K. Rowling has hit the book stores. According to most of the ‘in the know’ web sites 1.2 million copies of ‘The Deathly Hallows’ were sold on the opening day. From Ankara, Alaska to Miami, Florida, fans lined up for hours to get their hands on the final book in the series.

J. K. Rowling has certainly hit the spot with young and old readers. It is hard to believe that this was the single mother, living out of her car, and no money in her pocket, who has become the richest author of all time. Several articles have claimed that she is richer than the Queen! Now I have not seen the Queens bank statement so I cannot verify this claim, but I think it would be fair to say that J. K. Rowling has done pretty good for herself.

Her choice of subject matter does not sit well with many people though. Personally I think that witches, warlocks, and muggles are just fine. When you write fiction, you have complete freedom. Alas my views are not universal, the always irritating Bible Belt feels that these books should not be available in the local libraries, because of the subject matter. Of course these are the same people that fought for at least the last hundred years to stop ‘Charles Darwin’ and his theory of natural selection being taught in the local schools. About the only thing wrong with ‘Natural selection’ is the fact that it takes 1000’s of years, so the bible belt probably has something like 9,900 years to go!

If the world (oops bible belt) can be happy with Mr Rogers, Sesame Street, and the Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis, all of which at some point have played in the world of the supernatural, or at least in the very, very unlikely. What is wrong with Harry Potter?

I have not read ‘The Deathly Hallows’ yet. As a critic reviewer, I know that she has a clunky style, and is not great at easing plot segments into the story, but she must be doing something right. You don’t become a gazzilionaire by being a bad writer.

My advice to all you bible thumpers is…. Read your own books first, lets face it the Bible is not exactly a happy tome, and the Koran is now being used to wage war to make us all Islam converts. So my question is: What’s wrong with Harry Potter?
