There’s been an outbreak of stars attacking paparazzi these days. On the Today show this morning, Anne Curry remarked that it is our own fault really, because we are too curious. Is it up to all of us to control our own curiosity? Is curiosity really where the madness begins?

Actually, it turns out that play may be where it all begins. According to scientists, the curiosity cycle begins with play. The more we play the more curiosity we develop and the more we learn, accomplish and grow. (Curiosity, Pleasure and Play: A neurodevelopment perspective, Perry, MD, Hogan, Med, Marlin, 2000) Dr. Hogan and his team found that the curiosity cycle looks something like this:

Curiosity – Play – Pleasure – Repeat – Mastery/Confidence/Growth – More Play – More Curiosity

Could this help explain why Americans and other Western civilizations appear so addicted to stars’ lives – because we play so darn much as children? It could indeed. Play has proven neurological benefits. In an article entitled Play for the Brain, Betsy Mann describes brain imaging techniques that demonstrate how childhood experiences shape the lasting structure of the brain. In early childhood, she explains how play is the key to successful development. (Child and Family Canada, Play for the Brain, Betsy Mann, 2000).

So as for photographers who stalk the stars, the demand is there. It doesn’t appear that our natural curiosity will be changing anytime soon. Sorry Britney! But for the people out there wishing they could be famous some day, are you really sure about that?!? And for others, who don’t want a life without privacy but who embrace their curiosity, click away!…..
