A new breakthrough has been invented in the area of gum disease, tooth decay and tooth loss. Scientists have invented a plastic pill, designed to sit between the damaged tooth and infected gum. The pill releases pain medication and fights gum swelling as well as nasty plaque bacteria. Most amazing about this invention is the pill’s ability to not only heal the affected area but regenerate new growth and consequently, healthy gums. Testing for the pill has begun in animal trials.
To help with the pain and swelling, the pill releases salicylic acid, the active ingredient in aspirin. The pill also contains three different antimicrobials to fight plaque and bacteria. Don’t expect this ‘wonder pill’ to appear on shelves any time soon. After testing is completed, the trial will have to be conducted in humans. Approximately 10% of the US population would qualify for treatment with the pill and the pill may substitute surgery for those people.
