It's great that the internet is opening up new avenues for candidates to reach out to young people. But it's critical that candidates complement their internet outreach with real live interactions between all the candidates and youth. They need to engage in substantive conversations with young people on the issues that they care about most-- such as global warming, college affordability, healthcare, and financial security. In 2008, 18-29 year olds will represent nearly a quarter of the electorate. Young people are going to vote and will vote even more if the candidate talk to them. It's not enough for the candidates to blog or post to Facebook.

But young people across the country aren't waiting for the candidates to come to them--instead they are going directly to all the Presidential candidates and asking them one simple question: What's Your Plan? To stop global warming. To make college affordable. To provide effective, affordable healthcare. To address financial security for Americans.

Over the past few months, young people have met with the candidates face to face in California, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. And so far they've spoken to Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani, Barack Obama, John Edwards, Duncan Hunter, John Cox, Bill Richardson, Chris Dodd, John McCain, Tommy Thompson, Dennis Kucinich, Hillary Clinton, Sam Brownback, Mike Huckabee and Joe Biden. In the upcoming months hundreds more young people will continue to meet with all the Presidential candidates across the county to ask them: What's Your Plan?

What’s Your Plan? is a project of the Student PIRGs’ New Voters Project and allied youth organizations. The Student PIRGs’ New Voters Project is the nation’s largest youth voter mobilization campaign. Since 2003, the project has registered more than 600,000 young people to vote and made 650,000 peer-to-peer contacts to encourage young people to turn out to the polls on Election Day. www.newvotersproject.org
