Former Bangladesh Prime minister and leader of Awami League was arrested by Bangladesh security forces Monday morning according to a report published in The Daily Star newspaper.
Sheikh Hasina’s house was earlier cordoned off by security forces this morning and speculation was rife among city dewellers that Hasina would be picked up soon by the security forces as a prison van was seen standing near her house.
Bangladesh is currently ruled by an interim government backed by the country’s armed forces.

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackFinally the Government had the courage to arrest this corrupt, traitor of Bangladesh. I was specially surprised to hear that she took bribes and spearheaded the attack on garments of Bangladesh. What a traitor this kind of persons can be? If this was in US, she would have arrested a long time ago.
A sad dawn for the nation of Bangladesh.
I am dissapointed at the present government of Bangladesh for not pursuing the 1996 stock market scam that Hasina/Kibria and Salman Rahman of Beximco orchestrated. Thousands of families went bankrupt due the stock market scam.
I support the anti-corruption drive fully but:
1. The present government should ensure people’s interest not their own political agenda is being surved by the current moves.
2. Stop treating the two illeterate and incompetent ladies differently. These two should be ashamed of what their party men did to the country (looting, killing etc.) and at least say sorry to the people. Execute them just as Chinese govt. recently did to a corrupt official who caused several deaths.
I agree with you Ehab. Bangladesh will now understand what it takes to be ruled by military animals. They are simply trying to have their turn to exploit us. Sheikh Hasina or Khaleda Zia, though not supported by a few (urban middle class hypocrites) - are indeed two major factors for democracy. If they are detained, the process will automatically stop. And I fear then it will only pave the way for the islamic militants. We should remember Bangladeshi Army is nothing but a phantom of Pakistani Army. The way on which Pakistan is, Bangladesh will be soon too. What Parvez Musharraf did to Pakistan by banning Benajir and Sharif, is what present “pro-jamat military junta” is doing to Bangladesh - i.e. ensuring fundamentalist rule.
Well done. Great news! Nation is happy. This greedy lady was the biggest liar of the country. She never cared about the country. Lives taken by the name of Hartal was justified for her. She should be sentenced death for that.
Be ethical, what is wrong is wrong. This traitor of the nation should be punished. This blood sucker wasn’t the key holder of democracy. Democracy will be flourished better without greedy Khaleda and liar hasina. Congrats! Moral of the story….Job well done !!
Be ethical? And you support arresting Sheikh Hasina?
Wht proves you have against her? Did they even question her before making such move? Well job well done.. government has proved that they have no intention to give a free and fair election rather they want to kill the democracy.
If Hasina and Khaleda are arrested, is there any reason to think there won’t be any free and fare election because of that? ARIF: please explain (if you kindly can) why do we need these two ladies to have free and fair election.
Rupert, if this was in US, nothing would have happened! The money businessmen gave (or allegdely she took from) would have been treated as “soft money”…
Its only in Bangladesh people would call Richard Mellon Scaife’s mollion doller donation as “bribe” or corruption!
This third world country is doomed for being overly self-critical and no being as much optimistic as Bush’s supporters!
If a government can arrest popular leaders to implement preconceived plan then it is obvious that there will be no fair election under them. If you think Koreshi, RATS or Mannan Bhuiyan’s are supplement of Hasina then you live in fool’s world.
Nevertheless who gave them the mandate to clean politics? Is it not true that there are many corruption and murder cases pending against Indian political leaders including Sonia Gandhi- and did you find Indian army crossing the line?
How can you forget the 15 years of military rule? Are you trying to say that they were better than Hasina’s term? Did not she solve many major political and diplomatic problems during her regime? Is there any proof against any corruption cases against her? And if there was any do really think that Zia would not use those to destroy her?
If military governments had the capacity to bring peace and stability then the world would have been a different place. The simple truth is that they can create fear, choke the voice of freedom but can never win.
Any step taken by a military-backed governemnt must be motivated by their political goals. Arrest of Hasina also a plot to remove her from politics. She is clearly an innocent political leader like her father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, father of Bangladesh. Present governmet in fact is now actiing just like General Ziaur Rahman when Col. Abu Taher saved his life, but General Zia hanged him for fulfilling his political aspiration. Present government is a benificiary of Hasina’s political movement, but they are now acting like a ‘Mirjafor’ after getting state power! Be aware about them, right after the annoucement of the election ‘roadmap’ (not schedule!), persent military-backed governmet is diverting nations attention from election to intelligence-made corruption. How evil the governmet is!
Mr. Sayed R. Zaman, are you living in a fool’s paradise? Don’t you know that the present military government is building up a King’s Party and trying just to remove two popular leaders - Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia from Bangladesh politics in the name of ‘minus two’? What does it mean? Do you just want the removal of two leaders? Are not the leaders/formar lawmakers are now acting for reforms, like Mannan Bhuya, Shakhawat Hossain Bokul, Zahiruddin Sawpan, Ehsanul Haq Milan and others known as corrupted leaders? In fact, the present military government wants a future puppet ‘elected’ (selected would be in reality) governemt for enjoying the ‘cream’ of power. So, they are not arresting above-mentioned so-called reformist leaders, but giving them full support. Your (government’s) goal should not be to remove any leader, but to strengthen the political institutions, like parliament, administration etc. If you make the political institutions democratically active and transparent, no leader can do anything. Present government knows that if such popular leaders like Hasina or Khaleda stay in politics, they cannot get the test of cream of power, which already they have started to enjoy placing their men in the Election Commission (a retired Brigadier), a major-general in the Public Service commission, an ex army chief in the anti-corruption commission, and so on. Most important, if Hasina stays in politics she will certainly be the next prime minister of Bangladesh as already have been predicted by some recent public polls, but not any person from coming King’s Party. Please watch Bangladesh politics and keep your eyes open, you can see everything clearly.
1. Does one need to be a rocket scientist or nuclear physicists to understand that Hasia and Khaleda, in the name of democracy, created a bunch of thugs who had been looting public money in millions?
2. Why can’t we all think positive and start working hard developing awareness for a better political system and culture rather than portray these two ladies as “popular” leaders?
3. Could Hasina-Khaleda supporters please explain 5 solid causes in favor of NOT to put these 2 ladies on trial for their irresponsible acts and some cases, active patronization, for that number of corrupt people became million dollar rich with no valid reasons.
4. Why after 36 years of independence we still treat our “democratically” elected public representatives like queens? Don’t we feel the need to change this sick political culture?
5. How does Joy made $300 million and I or many other Bangladeshis can’t despite having similar academic and professional achievement/ background? Joy didn’t inherit any wealth from his grand parents (Bongobondhu and father of Dr. Wajed) but then how does he make so much of wealth when nobody else can?
6. How does Tareq Rahman make millions also when people with similar skill set and academic/professional background fail to do so and when we know Tareqe’s father/ grand parents weren’t millionaires?
7. Same works for Coco, Falu, Lalu, Bulu, Dulu, Bana Huda and all who don’t have any solid skill set or lottery winning background to have millions.
8. How does Sheikh Rehana purchase a million dollar plus home in one of the most expensive areas in London? Did Rehana or her husband’s forefathers were millionaire? Didn’t we know how did Shafiq Siddiqi (Rehana’s hubby) played dirty with commoners money during the Dhaka Share Market outrage in mid 90s?
9. We may have hundred more questions like above could be in our mind. So dear 2 lady-leader lovers -you still think we should feel bad and protest arresting Hasina and may be Ms. Khaleda soon? Any justification to feel really bad at all??
10. It is also time to take folks (Amla, generals, business guys and so on) to task who made their own fortune and kept running this trend of looting public money with the blessings of these 2 ladies.
11. Joy, in his recent statements on his mom’s arrest, forgot that 1971 and 2007 are not same in terms of gravity of the overall political situation and commoner’s expectation. I am sure Joy is wise enough to understand it but he had just tried playing “foul game” and proved that he belongs to the same rusty stinking band of looters by heart and mind. He forgot that his grandpa, Bongobondhu didn’t loot like his mom and uncle in 1971. 2007 and 1965-71 are two totally different scenarios.
12. So why do we need to cry for Hasina and Khaleda if they are arrested and put on trial?
I totally agree living in fool’s paradise (Aparajita Bandopadhdhay & Arif) by supporting Hasina-Khaleda’s arrest amid their trial -but please try answer the following:
1. Why do we have such Hasina and AL supporters who ransacked/ set ablaze public buses/properties (Mymensingh and Jessore) and have gone to a complete destruction behavior while protesting the arrest of their “queen” like figure? Aren’t we looking forward and working hard at this time to say good bye to such extreme “leader-praising” political culture?
2. I consider as a nation, our people are very emotional by nature but does this make sense that we are to give bandits a free go who looted public money and wealth and figures like Hasina and Khaleda who offered solid shelter underneath own umbrella in last 15 years?
3. Does anybody think with no active “blessings” and patronization from Hasina-Khaleda -thugs like Haris Chowdhry, Falu, Nasim, Pintu, Haji Mokbul and so on could play Ha-do-do with public money at all?
5. In “Close-up -Tomakey Khujse Bangladesh”, people may choose Salma the #1 over much better contenders like Muhin, Putul or Ronti. The polling result that selects #1 singer reflects how emotionally we choose somebody (I assume Salma was the youngest one of all the participants, that’s why) by neglecting rationale. But can we really afford to do so while selecting leadership just by applying the same emotional judgment like by favoring Hasina because she’s Bongobondhu daughter or the other one being Late Zia’s spouse only?
Doesn’t it sound like public opinion reflecting fire or stone-age or complete mediaeval even though a clan, at least, used to select their “headman” based on some leadership qualities after all!
6. Isn’t it the time to stand beyond emotions and become realistic to have a better, effective and honest political leadership in days ahead?
So why to destroy public properties to show any more useless agonies?
Syed r zaman: no offence pls…. end of the day you should admit that the way they arrest sheikh hasina it was not correct and the excuse given by muderer mainul islam(ittefaq muder) was wrong. And if you want look froward w CIA agents in our country then i have nothing 2 say……
