Set for release on July 31st, Robert Gordon and Chris Spedding are back with It’s Now or Never on Rykodisc, The new album features 15 Elvis Presley songs as performed by Robert Gordon and Chris Spedding, along with the legendary Jordanaires in honor of the 30th Anniversary of Elvis’ Death (August 16, 1977).
Robert Gordon began playing guitar at the age of 15; 45 years later he’s still going strong. Gordon’s debut album back in 1977 was simply called Robert Gordon with Link Wray, which he recorded with his childhood hero and guitar legend, Link Wray (best known for his hits, “Rumble†and “Rawhideâ€). Together they scored a hit with the rockabilly song, “Red Hot.” On that same album was legendary British session man turned stateside, Chris Spedding. Fortified with Presley’s own legendary back up singers, The Jordanaires, Robert and Spedding are back to shake things up again, but this time to honor the king of rock n’ roll, Elvis Presley.
Recorded in Nashville and produced by Gordon himself, It’s Now or Never is truly a king-sized tribute. A riveting combination of favorites and lesser-known Presley tunes, Robert Gordon and Chris Spedding do real justice to these classics. Gordon makes each song his own and not once does he come off sounding like an Elvis impersonator, while Spedding rolls off classic rock guitar riffs throughout.
“I’m singing better than I ever have,” Gordon says with confidence and this from a man who’s been around the block, down the boulevard and through the alley of rockabilly city.
From boppers like “My Baby Left Me” and “Don’t Be Cruelâ€, strollers like “A Mess of Blues” and “Too Muchâ€, swayers like “Don’t Leave Me Now†and swooners like “It’s Now or Never†and “Love Me†this homage to the “King†digs deep into the riches of Elvis’ treasure chest and pulls out handfuls of golden melodies. To sum up this album, I’ll take a line from the Stray Cats, “it’s got cat class and it’s got cat styleâ€.
Robert Gordon and Chris Spedding will be playing select dates in the Tri-State Area, among them are: July 3rd at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ (opening for Southside Johnny) and August 9th at Joe’s Pub in New York City. More tour dates to be announced.
